What "your sign" actually means, and why it's tied to your birthday.
Your sun sign is, quite literally, where the Sun was standing in the sky the day you were born.
From Earth, the Sun appears to trace a path across the sky over the course of a year — this path is called the ecliptic. Ancient astronomers divided that path into twelve equal 30-degree sections, each named after a constellation that roughly sat in that part of the sky: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, and so on through Pisces.
On the day you were born, the Sun was passing through one of those twelve sections. Whichever one it was in is your sun sign — the one most people mean when they ask "what's your sign?"
You may have noticed sun sign date ranges vary by a day depending on the source. That's because a calendar year (365 days) doesn't divide evenly into the Sun's actual orbital period, so the exact moment the Sun crosses from one sign into the next drifts by about six hours annually, and gets corrected by leap years. If you were born within a day or two of a sign boundary, it's worth double-checking the exact time of the Sun's transit for your specific birth year — most of the time, though, the standard date ranges are all you need.
